But first, the third generation Z car was introduced in 1984, code named the Z31. The Z series chassis was a total departure from the previous S series chassis. The Z series continues until today. The Z31 300ZX was more of a grand touring car and less of a performance car than ever, it was bigger, heaver at 3027 lbs and more luxurious than its 280ZX predecessor. This generation was completely redesigned, continuing to be innovative with the sports car stylings of the time.
A 3.0 liter SOHC V6 engine, known as the VG30E replaced the classic inline six. The chassis had McPherson strut front suspension and semi trailing arm rear suspension with 4 wheel disc brakes. Through each year of its 5 year span, the first of the 300ZX lineage added items that would bring it to the luxury class, such as T-tops as standard in 1985 and 16” wheels in 1986. 1987 called for smoother bodylines and better aerodynamics, while a Garrett T3 turbocharger added five more horses under the hood.
